From the beginning...

History of Mumbo's

In the mid-1970's, disco balls were spinning and facial hair growing longer. And Jim "Mumbo" Mumbert was caught up in both. Having grown up in Lodi, CA, Mumbo was currently living in the San Jose area working in the electronics industry as a Program Manager. Aside from that, he also owned a house in Tahoe City, which he used most frequently in the winter as a ski cabin.

In 1977, Mumbo finally gave up the corporate grind and gave in to the call of the mountains. He moved into his Tahoe City ski cabin and, in May of that year, opened The Mountain Shop in Tahoe City's Bechdolt Building near the golf course. Product selection grew and, to reflect the expanded offering and to differentiate the store from numerous other Mountain Shop's in the region, the store was renamed Mumbo's Mountain Sports.

After 15 years at that location, Mumbo's Mountain Sports closed its doors in 1992. It was not long, however, before the memory of the store compelled Mumbo to start over. Thus, in May 1995, Mumbo's Mountain Outfitters was opened in The Boatworks Mall. With just a quarter of the floor space of the old store, Mumbo's Mountain Outfitters sought to stand out through its distinctive selection of high-quality clothing from a variety of brands – from internationally renowned (Columbia) to cult-following huge (Life is good) to small and eclectic (Wind River).

Today the selection at Mumbo's continues to be distinctive, with over 2,000 items from almost 40 different brands. Next time you're in the Lake Tahoe area (why not leave tomorrow?), be sure to stop in, say hi, and see what we have to offer!
